BREAST REDUCTION

Excessively large, sagging breasts can be uncomfortable and unhealthy. They certainly also restrict ones lifestyle and activities. Breasts consist of fat. It is the fat that gives the female breast its shape, contour, size and beauty. Certain patients, therefore, may need to correct their eating habits before considering surgery. Breast reduction surgery reduces over developed breasts and can alleviate back pain, shoulder strap furrows, hand numbness and breathing difficulty.

The Procedure
This procedure is normally performed under general anaesthetic and may take 2 to 4 hours. There are many variations to this procedure. Most commonly, an incision is made around the areola and extends downward following the curve of the crease beneath the breast; the incision takes the shape of an anchor. Excess glandular and fatty tissue is removed and the areola and nipple are moved to their position, creating your new breast shape.

Recovery after any Breast Procedure

Certain patients will be discharged the same day, while others may need to stay overnight for observation. You will experience discomfort for several days or weeks. Your breasts will be swollen and very tender. It is vital to rest and follow a healthy lifestyle during your recovery, in order for your body to heal quickly. It is imperative to stop smoking, 5 weeks prior to and after surgery, as this will reduce blood and oxygen supply to the surgical area. When the blood supply is reduced, the tissues heal more slowly. You should be able to resume light activities after a week. It is important to wear a post operative/ sports bra for extra support. To minimize scarring, Dr Lovric will advise a Scar Therapy Programme.
